The Explorer is a force to be reckoned with. It’s the Police car of choice for many precincts around New England and I see so many more on the roads that I just can’t be sure if it’s a cop behind me most of the time in the dark.

That image looks like someone crashed through a guard rail and is rolling down a ravine . I did not expect to see a lead pic of an Explorer actually off-roading .

id probably say about 60-65% of chicagos police force now drives explorers which is cool since they are made here on the south side. i expect that to increase to 70-80 percent in the next 5 years as more and more crown vics are phased out

I’m sure the fact that there are so many of the civilian versions on the road is a selling point to police departments. People see a Crown Vic, they know it’s a cop (or taxi). But if they see any of the hundreds of thousands of privately-owned Explorers out there, it’s only a 50/50 shot. Maybe it’s a cop, maybe it isn’t, but just in case gotta be careful anyway. Keeps the teeming masses of traffic offenders-in-waiting guessing!

my 04 handled sand dunes and beaches pretty well when we were in North Carolina last year. the same could not be said for the new expedition someone managed to beech

always gotta look out for roof rails . the pursuit explorers dont have them from the factory. some unmarked squads add them back later but if its missing roof rails its probably a cop

I’m pretty good at picking out the cop Explorers from the not-cop Explorers, but that relies on picking out specific details like this.
If I see a Toyota Highlander, I don’t think cop. If I see an Explorer, then it’s like, gotta look for cop lights, roof rails or not, steelies, etc. It requires more attention.

“If I see a (insert any 3-row CUV that’s not an Explorer here)...”

04 explorer - full truck frame built off the Ranger. Capable off-road.
15 explorer - basically a lifted Taurus Wagon. Not capable off-road.
For the record I do not personally have a problem with the current style of Explorer, though I’m happy to see them move towards RWD again.

They really are the Crown Vics spiritual successor.

There were a few crossover explorers and other smaller crossovers on the 4x4 access beaches and sand dunes that seemed to handle just fine, as long as they remembered to air down their tires really anything with more ground clearance than a sedan will do just fine

You have to use a traction selector on the arm rest to get it to not get itself stuck in sand and gravel. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great.

Yeah with the right tire set up I’m sure they’ll do fine in light stuff.
